'FIFA 14': Everton's Goodison Park makes video game debut

Electronic Arts have just announced another new feature set to be included in FIFA 14 –Precision Movement. Utilizing new technology codenamed ‘Locomotion‘ players will now go through a more realistic range of increases and decreases in speed or to put it another way – acceleration and deceleration.
This new technology will work in tandem with some of the other features we’ve already discussed in previous posts – namely sprint dribble turns.
We previously expressed our fears that this might produce unrealistic sharp turns during full sprinting movements, so these announcements really only serve to whet our appetite still further for a hands on demo in the near future.
FIFA 14 precision movement
Okay so we’re being slightly unfair on EA at the moment and Precision motion is the big thing they’re rolling out for FIFA 14. It affect every facet of the gameplay in the new version from passing to shooting and ball control to simple turns. EA has to get this right or gameplay will become a lottery.
Kantcho Doskov a gameplay producer explains that in previous iterations players were given full control over where players could move and when to the detriment of realistic movement. So if you wanted to change direction even though a players foot wasn’t planted on the ground you could – this is what Doskov called “floaty animation”.
Sure it allowed you to decide exactly where the player moved, but did it look like real football? No.
With Precision motion affecting all aspects of the game the aforementioned speed changes will also take some getting used to. The viscosity of the gameplay has been ramped up, there now feels like an inertia of movement, so that players take more time to get up to speed and also to come to a dead stop.
Legs will need to be planted before you can pivot and turn and the gameplay physics will also affect ball movement to bring an all round greater feel of realism to the gameplay side of FIFA 14.
We just can’t wait to get our hands on the demo.
In another announcement EA has struck up a three year partnership with FC Barcelona, which has meant the scanned in likenesses of 17 squad players to provide a more realistic model for the game.
The deal also signals the return of the Nou Camp stadium to the franchise and Barcelona are now added to the partnered list of European clubs which already includes Manchester City, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

NBA 2K14: Latest Buzz on New Features, Soundtrack, Release Date and More

NBA 2K14 is one of the most anticipated games of the year and will inject new life into one of the best basketball franchises ever created.
Many thought that the game’s developer, Visual Concepts, would have trouble topping last season’s masterpiece—NBA 2K13—which was executive produced by Jay-Z and widely regarded as one of the top installments in the series.
However, with a new generation of video game consoles on the horizon, it seems that the geniuses behind 2K have outdone themselves.
Let’s take a look at when you can get your hands on the game, which new features will be implemented, which old ones have been re-introduced, the complete soundtrack for the game and more.
Release Date: October 1 (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC), TBA (XboxOne, Playstation 4)

Cover Athlete: LeBron James

One of the more fun multiplayer modes of NBA 2K10 and NBA 2K11was “My Crew,” which allowed up to 10 players (two teams of five) to compete against one another online.
Unfortunately, it was nixed when NBA 2K12 was released and was nowhere to be found in Jay-Z’s edition of the game.
That all changes this year, as it was recently announced that “My Crew” would be returning as “Crew Mode,” once again allowing up to 10 players to duke it out—this time with leaderboards, statistics and ranking systems.
For those of you who have a few friends and are into testing your video game basketball abilities against other organized groups, this is one of the most exciting announcements in years.
It’s great to see that the 2K creators are listening to their fans, as it was one of the most requested features from the community, according to Owen Good of Kotaku.

Although fans have been creating rosters and implementing teams and players from foreign leagues for years now, NBA 2K14 will officially embrace basketball’s international flavor by adding 14Euroleague teams to the game.
While it would be nice to eventually see more of these powerhouse clubs from overseas make it in, this will be a solid test run that will introduce a ton of new teams to an American fanbase that is largely only familiar with the NBA.

Interview: Project Phoenix’s Hiroaki Yura Discusses His Vision for the Game, JRPGs, PS4 and More

Project Phoenix made the headlines due to the very successful start of its Kickstarter campaign and due to the stellar cast gathered by Director Hiroaki Yura to create the game, including acclaimed composer Nobuo Uematsu, but there’s still a lot we don’t know about this extremely interesting indie JRPG project.
That’s why I contacted Yura-san and arranged a chat with him, in order to ask more details about his vision for what could very well be a revolution in a genre that hasn’t exactly been explored that deeply by indie developers so far.
Luckily for us, turns out that Yura-san really had a lot to say, so take a seat, grab a cup of coffee and follow me into the world of Project Phoenix.
Giuseppe: First of all, could you introduce yourself, your project and team for our readers?
Hiroaki Yura: My name is Hiroaki Yura, I’m the creator, the director and the producer of the game Project Phoenix. It’s a JRPG with squad-based RTS combat mechanics.  It’s going to be primarily for the PC, it will be ported to iOS and Android, most likely for tablets. If they don’t perform well enough, we’re going to have a different use for them. In other words, we’re not going to change the game’s mechanics to suit the tablets. The tablets will need to live up to the standard of the game.
It may be ported to the PlayStation 4 and the Vita, but this isn’t yet confirmed. Once it’ll be confirmed we’ll send you a press release. Our team is made of many people from different backgrounds, from Asia, Europe and America. I gathered the best people I could find for the job and everyone is mostly working on royalty basis. That means that they won’t get paid until we’ll start selling the game in mid 2015.
The reason why we can do this is that everyone is a respected professional in his own field of work, so we don’t require to be paid, because this is a project born of passion. However we do need funds for modeling and similar tasks for Stephen (Unger)’s team, because he needs to hire a lot of people to create characters and environments.
This is the way we’re working, and that’s why we initially asked only for $100,000 (on Kickstarter). Our game is unlikely to go over budget, because we have been very conservative with the budget, so that we will be able to deliver on our promises. I’d like to say that the schedule will be pretty much on time, but there is a chance we might end up being late, but if that was to happen it will be to make sure that the quality of the game will be up to standard.

The concept of the game will definitely not change whether we’ll have a hundred thousand dollars or five million. The only difference made by the stretch goals, besides the multiplayer, is the ability to upgrade the concept. We will have to hire a new team to create the multiplayer, because it’ll be a completely different feature compared to what we’re making now.
Besides the multiplayer everything is building up on what we have already. For example if it’s music, we’re starting with synthesized music but if we reach the 1,650,000 dollars stretch goal, we’ll have live recording. The ground work is already done. All we need is just to record. That doesn’t take too much time and all we need is the money to get started.
G: People know you primarily as a musician and orchestra director. Is this your first experience as a game director and producer? Do you feel it’s a large change in role, or it’s actually similar?
HY: Absolutely, but it’s very  similar. I understand the intricacies of video game creation because of my experience as a music director. Also, I’m not a composer, I’m a violinist, and while violinists have no place in video game development, but as a music director, I direct people on what to do and how to do it. It’s not so different. In some cases it’s actually easier, because I deal with 120 musicians, while a game director has only to deal with five key men in order to execute his task. I find it much easier than directing an orchestra.
G: Considering that you’re a musician and the team includes other world class musicians like Uematsu-sensei, will music actually play a role in the story or even in the gameplay? I’m thinking about Macross for instance, or about the memorable opera scene in Final Fantasy VI.
HY: We will have a special place for music, but in the end we all agree that we’re making music for a video game–without the video game we are nothing. It’s the same thing with the illustrators and the artists–our team means nothing without the game. So we’re composing the music and creating the art for the game. They will play a large role, but not the main role.
G: What do you think about the current situation of JRPGs in the Japanese and worldwide markets? Does your decision to create Project Phoenix come from the need to fill some kind of void you perceive in the genre?
HY: Absolutely. I only make things that are missing. Currently what we are missing is what JRPG should be in the world today. Basically it comes down to the question: “What is a JRPG?” People have different answers. I’m good friend with (Hironobu) Sakaguchi-san, and I spoke to him about two weeks ago in his office. I asked him what is a JRPG to him. And for him JRPGs are about the characters and how they develop. Hiroki Hikuta, who is the composer of Secret of Mana and also a game director says the same thing.
For me it’s not just about the characters, but it’s also about the story of the characters. That’s the most important thing: the story. JRPG for me is like opera. It exists to tell a story and to give emotion, like listening to music or looking at beautiful art. You’re there to enjoy the show, the concept, the performance.
I don’t think the game mechanic is as important. Game mechanics have to be fun and fulfilling. It doesn’t need to conform to one type of gameplay like for instance turn based classic Final Fantasy-like. That’s why I went for RTS. I think it’s a very natural progression. The only reason why they did turn based back in the day was because they could do nothing else. Nowadays we can take things to real time easier.

'Call of Duty: Ghosts' adds female soldier to multiplayer for first time

Move over guys, there's a lady in the room. Infinity Ward has revealed that "Call of Duty: Ghosts" will introduce the option of playing a female soldier to the multiplayer mode of the game for the first time. Females have been seen in the single-player campaign in past versions of "Call of Duty," but never in multiplayer.

Mark Rubin, the studio lead for the game, tells the LA Times the female soldier comes with the option to customize your in-game player, whereas in the past it was randomized. He also notes that it's not simply the same male character, with a female skin laid on top of it. "We had to motion-capture differently. We couldn't use our guy animation on a girl, so it became a big thing."

The new playable character was unveiled during a trailer for the game's multiplayer mode which ended with a view of a female sniper. The trailer also debuted a brand new song from Eminem, which will be featured on the game's soundtrack.

"Call of Duty: Ghosts" will be in stores November 5. Check out the trailer below:

Grand Theft Auto Online revealed in new GTA V trailer

Rockstar Games has finally unveiled the online multiplayer for Grand Theft Auto V, featuring a persistent open world experience for 16 players.
The trailer below says it all but the multiplayer mode for Grand Theft Auto V is the most ambitious of any GTA game so far, and perhaps of any other game as well.
Although it’s available free as a part of Grand Theft Auto V the multiplayer is being treated as a separate game and won’t be available until two weeks after the main game is released.
GTA Online is described as a persistent shared-world experience, similar to a massively multiplayer online game with thousands of players in the same universe. However, only a maximum of 16 will be able to interact at any one time.
You’ll be able to do all the same things as you can in the single-player game, but now including co-op heists, traditional deathmatches, and vehicle races (on land, sea, and air).

You can pit your crews (a feature borrowed from Max Payne 3) against other players, and take part in randomly-generated events such as armoured car robberies and bounty hunter missions.
You’ll even be able to play all the regular sports simulated in Grand Theft Auto V itself, including tennis, golf, and BASE jumping.
Your in-game character, which appears to include the option to play as a woman, can be full customised, including both visually and in terms of earned experience. You can also buy your own house, cars, planes, and other items.
On top of all this you can also create your own missions using an in-game editor, which allows you to set spawn points, lay down props, and customise which vehicles and weapons are used. You’ll be able to upload your creations online and to play those of other people.
Grand Theft Auto V will be released on September 17 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while Grand Theft Auto Online will be launching on October 1. Despite rumours there is still no official confirmation of PC or next gen versions.
